Course Aims – you have a month to get one burlesque dance routine together so here’s a list of things you should be considering now:-
A burlesque name for yourself.
A signature costume – it may have something to do with your name.
A piece of music/song/mix that you would like to use for your act.
Props you may want to use.
Buying some nipple tassels.
What kind of character you wish to portray in your first routine – funny, cute, classic, scary, sexy…..

Class 1
I intend to begin with an intro to bump and grind and tease. We will learn the basic steps of burlesque and learn to tease using gloves and boas.
Please bring heels and comfy clothes.
** If you have any costume ideas – please bring everything with you. Ideally wear it but if you’re too shy – just bring it along for discussion.

Class 2
Choreography, costume, tasseling and striptease.
By this class, I would like everybody to be attending in costume. Please try to buy some tassels from Ebay or Anne Summers. I do have pairs you can borrow but nicer to have some of your own.
Also – I would like it if you had found a song you would like to dance to.
This class will be held in my private studio as we will be discovering sexy striptease moves…

Week 3
Hair and make up, tassel making and watching each others ‘work in progress’ shows. Group feed back on individual routines.
We have a lovely make up/ hair artist coming along to this called Kitty B.
I would also like to see what dances you have been working on at this class

Week 4
Performances, feedback.
By this session, I will be sitting back and enjoying the show – fingers crossed.

After the course finishes, you may want to continue working with myself and your fellow students. If so, we will discuss an intermediate course.

There may be performance opportunities at Sirens, a show I produce in Brighton, but the standard has to be high.
The next show is on Friday 28th October at The Latest Music Bar, Manchester St. Brighton.

Do not be confused: burlesque is about far more than mere striptease. A skilled burlesque dancer titillates her audience as much through a single wink or a nod, as with the flash of her thigh. Above all else, the joy of burlesque lies in the riveting power of suggestion.

Derived from the Italian word ‘burla’ – meaning ‘mockery’ – burlesque has enjoyed a rich history, and originated long before the invention of the art form as we know it today – in Athens in 411 BC, in fact, with Aristophanes’ comic play ‘Lysistrata’.

‘Lysistrata’ charts one woman’s attempt to end the Peloponnesian War by encouraging the female population of Greece to deny their husbands sexual privileges while also flaunting their bodies in front of them.

The idea of provocation and denial lies at the heart of burlesque, which focuses on the tease rather than the strip.

In 1868, Lydia Thompson led the Victorian burlesque troupe, The British Blondes, from the musical halls of London to New York where, it is said, the men went wild for their flirtatious comedy routines, songs and dance.

In decadent 19th-century Paris, meanwhile, it was the age of the cancan, the Moulin Rouge and the Folies Bergère, which gave birth to the age of illusory burlesque. At the helm of the revolution was a girl who went simply by the name of “Miss”.

Not a natural beauty, “Miss” instead invented her own legend, convincing her audience that hers were “the most beautiful legs in the world”. It was the showgirl’s job, she explained, “to create and sell magic”.

A successful burlesque performer, it is said, can convince her audience, during the course of her show, that the she is the most beautiful and desirable woman in the world. Every man in the room should want her – and her only.

Straightforward striptease this is not. In burlesque, insinuation and innuendo reign supreme; results are achieved as much through what is not shown as what is. A true burlesque audience is never wholly satisfied.

The KUKU Club – VIP Room- 10 Pool Valley, BN1 1NJ.

This fabulous introduction to burlesque lasts about 2hrs in total. You will learn the basics of burlesque. This includes a warm up using the famous ‘bump and grind’ steps. You’ll learn how to take off a glove, how to use a boa and how to put it all together to make a great routine.

Your coach on the day will also give you a demonstration on how to nipple tassel twirl.

There is no striptease expected of anyone.

The emphasis is on FUN and PARTY. Anybody can take part, even if they are heavily pregnant.

Please Note – People with feather allergies may find this class distressing.

You will be taught by Rebecca Drury a.k.a Miss Utopia Blossom who is the author of three books called The Naughty Girls Guide to Lapdancing, Poledancing and Striptease. She has also been seen on TV in How to Have Sex After Marriage CH5 and Boob Envy Virgin 1. She is an expert in all forms of alternative dance and has a classical dance background.
